Diary of a swinger, mood swings in times of Covid-19 Pandemic

The past decade was all about mental health awareness, we've heard and read about medical terms like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder), Schizophrenia and Bipolarity much more than what used to be common, like slow, unbearable, manic, crazy and hysterical.
Although seminars, webinars and mass information of all sorts helps with proper diagnosis for the mentally ill, and therefore gives access to proper treatment for a better lifestyle, and a socially functional one, unfortunately, it also gives information access to the common population which makes of false diagnosis and self-medication a high risk.
It seems as if lately ADHD and ADD have become a trend in "diagnosing" active NORMAL children, same as Bipolarity in adults. Technology, the fast pace of our lives and easy access to information and misdiagnosis made of us a labeling loving society. We love knowledge and we believe we know how to use it! Sadly, bipolarity has become "trendy" in our society, especially lately during the Covid-19 Pandemic. A bipolar disorder is not all about the highs and lows we are going through in these rough times. Bipolarity is one of the hardest mental illnesses to diagnose and confirm, not because of its symptoms, but because of the unsystematic, intense and longer lasting symptom duration than your usual mood swings. Luckily, once diagnosed, bipolarity is treatable.

Have you been having violent mood swings lately? One minute you are OK and dealing with the drastic changes of your daily life, the next you burst into tears because you have to disinfect the can of peas you just got delivered to your doorstep? Mood swings are a normal reaction to the reshaping of our new routines, every major change needs a period of adaptation, the adaptation is not exclusive to our behavior but also the period of coping happens on "the inside", our recent popular mood swings are a sign of moving forward, it's the conflict of your old-self with your new-self.
Mood swings are more common in women because of the hormonal cycle women go through monthly, this causes men who are suffering from violent mood swings to be secretive and discreet about it, which puts them at higher risks of developing more dangerous symptoms and disorders.
The good news is that the emotional roller coaster we are riding is manageable easily and it all starts with a better diet, a healthier one obviously.
  • Try avoiding caffeine and high in sugar foods, both caffeine and sugar makes us irritable.
  • Try including Calcium and Magnesium in your diet (refer to your doctor before taking any supplements).
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Move and exercise more.
  • Schedule your day and stick to it.
  • Schedule your sleep and stick to it.
Reach out for professional help if you think your mood swings are becoming unmanageable, disrupting your life and/or the lives of people around you.
